Having Taika Waititi in a movie by Thor points in this direction but it raises an obvious question: how do you work independently within the strict limits that a Marvel producer imposes on you? Thor Ragnarok announced himself several years before Waititi was chosen as director and here the first serious dichotomy was presented: a director of small comedies had to take charge of a film about the end of a world, about the apocalypse of Asgard. Today the blockbuster has the imperative need to sell itself as quality cinema and has left aside an old generation of filmmakers specializing in explosions to find a product that can discuss you face to face with other productions that have always been considered inherently superior.

Kevin Feige’s last great strategy, the mind behind it all, has been to target emerging independent sockshares film talent and sign them for different productions: James Gunn, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi and in the near future Ryan Coogler, are all directors who started with small films that knew how to win the favor of the public and critics and that today they serve to Marvel to varnish their productions with an aura of legitimacy that before these films did not have or they were not interested to have. It sounds strange to speak of the avant-garde applied to a study that professes the most commercial and standardized cinema possible, and that exercises a tight control of study with each one of its productions, however it is evident that we refer to its capacity to lead the market anticipating or even creating the massive demand that holds all its products today. This 2017 was the year in which ‘Marvel Studios’.
